How does Spotify work with my receiver?
By connecting the unit to the same network as mobile devices, such as a smartphone and tablet, you can enjoy music played with Spotify Connect wirelessly. To play Spotify Connect, install a Spotify application on your smartphone or tablet. Also, you need to obtain a Spotify premium account.
Start up the Spotify application. Play a track on the Spotify application, switch the screen to the playback operation screen, and then tap “Devices Available” on the bottom of the screen.
Select your unit.

So why does it only work sometimes? Leave it sit for week and start head scratching all over again. Need some troubleshooting tips
This only works for the main room. I'm trying to use tv as the main room input and Spotify for the secondary room. The rubber can do this as I can get it to play both at once. However, I can't use the Spotify app with the secondary room. If I'm in the app and select the onkyo, it only allows me to select one device, and when I do, it turns off the second room and plays only on the main room. I think have to turn the secondary back on, force the main back to tv, and then select Spotify for the secondary room. However it will not play what I had selected in the app, it plays some random other song and plays that one song over and over. It seems that I need to be able to select the second room as a device, but I can only select onkyo as the main room. Also Pandora in the onkyo app allows me to directly select the playlist to play, but there is no such option for Spotify in the onkyo app.
If you come across issues by using the Spotify app, you can use DumpMedia to extract your playlists from Spotify to MP3 format. Then you can use a system default player to play these MP3 files instead.
